Belgium has played a key role in Europe and the world, with its strongly globalized economy and excellent transport infrastructure. It is a founding member of the European Union and hosts the organization, as well as many other international organizations like NATO.
Its population of 11 million is mainly 97 percent urban. Because of it strategic location, Belgium is roughly the 15th-largest trading nation in the world.
Belgium’s two largest region include the Dutch-speaking region of Flanders in the north and the French-speaking southern region of Wallonia. The Brussels capital region is mostly French-speaking, although it is officially bilingual. The capital of Brussels is divided into 19 municipalities.
Deeply Integrated into the Fabric of Europe
The Belgium economy is heavily service-oriented, with a highly productive workforce, elevated GNP and high exports per capita. Its main exports include raw materials, machinery and equipment, chemicals, raw diamonds, pharmaceuticals, metals and food products. Since 1922, Belgium and Luxembourg have been a single trade market with customs and a currency union.
Belgium strongly supports an open economy and the extension of powers of EU institutions to integrate member economies.
The railway network in Belgium is the EU’s highest in density, and its road network has been expanded significantly since 1970 (by 5%). The Brussels airport handles 80% of all air traffic.
